To the editor,
Open AI extending itself into top Indian education systems, after establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in the education sector is curious (Front page “Nvidia, Open AI announce partnerships with Indian firms, educational institutes”, February 19th).
Deals such as this seek to promote a learning culture heavily intertwined with AI, to “thrive in a world with AI”, but continue to wield commercial influence on education. Such initiatives represent a double-edged sword. On one hand, students can gain exposure to cutting-edge tools that enhance their skills and employability. On the other, there is a risk of creating a generation of dependent users, turning them into future customers of the very platforms introduced to them.
While it is important to adapt to changing technology, we must assess the impact of embracing AI in institutes such as IIT’s and AIIMS. Mr. Raghav Gupta and others involved must consider whether the one lakh students expected to benefit will gain educational empowerment or simply become long-term consumers of these AI systems. Technological integration in education is inevitable, but it must remain in the pursuit of public interest, not market expansion alone.
Yours sincerely,
Nisa Raghuraman.
