City report analysis

The following article is from The Hindu, 22nd February, 2026.

The above article is an issue-based coverage of disposal of dry leaves and consequent burning of them. This issue is significant since peak leaf shedding occurs during the period of February and March. Timeliness and accuracy of reporting are emphasized through this coverage.

The main stakeholders in this situation are residents, sanitation workers and officials from the BSWML. Since those affected are many residents, this article gives space for residents from many localities, to voice the main concerns regarding leaf burning. Firstly, we are introduced to the main fear, which is accidental fires from leaf burning in public spaces such as roadsides and parks. Mahesh Muniraju from a welfare society is concerned about safety, especially of children. Others pointed out different types of waste being burned with the leaves. This copy provides a balanced view since areas where the trend has reduced, such as HRBR layout, Halasuru and Kamannahalli, have also been included in the coverage.

Sanitation workers who are in charge of cleaning these leaves, have been given room to defend themselves. A pourakarmika from Gandhinagar explained how pressure for burning can come from residents themselves, which is contrary to the testaments of the residents and shows a separate aspect of the problem. Maria George, a resident, expressed dissatisfaction with the corporation’s response after repeated complaints. The article gives BSWML officials to explain the measures they have taken to tackle the issue. They explain how efforts for transportation of leaves are being made, but acknowledge that the measures are insufficient.

All stakeholders are given an opportunity to speak and are appropriately quoted. However, some statements are at odds with each other. Residents associate blame with corporations and seek to receive appropriate responses. Sanitation workers are sometimes forced by residents to burn the leaves. BSWML officials seem to struggle with monitoring leaf burning instances and prevent it, in spite of complaints.
