Crime report analysis

Updated: Feb 23

The chosen story is from The Hindu, February 19th, 2026.

The headline of this copy draws the reader in by providing all key details of the case, such as the perpetrator, the crime, the victim and also a hint at a unique development in the case, where the perpetrator attempted suicide. This style of headline, provides enough information to a reader who is scanning the page, and also draws the attention for them to deeply read the rest of the article.

The headline and Lede clearly answer the 5W’s and 1H.

‘What?’ is answered by stating the type of crime committed. Here, the perpetrator strangled his wife to death. ‘Where?’ is also stated in the headline, Avalahalli, in Bangalore. In the sub head, the cause or ‘why?’ is answered; the accused said that he felt no one would be there to take care of his wife after his death. ‘How?’ is answered in the lead where the ISRO employee allegedly strangled his wife dies with a towel. In the same paragraph, ‘When?’ is answered as Wednesday, that week. Those involved, the accused Nageshwar Rao at 65 and the deceased, Sandhya Shri at 60 are clearly identified in the second paragraph, which answers ‘Who?’ These questions mention the cause, weapon used, motive, background of the victim, unusual circumstances and the sources of information as essential details for the news story.

A few other significant aspects of the article are, how the writers do not mention the identity of the daughter of the deceased. Keeping certain information confidential is a crucial aspect of crime reporting. The new story goes on to cover how exactly the death occurred as per the police statements. It ends with the current state of the case where the police have registered a case against the accused and taken him into custody.

Looking at sensitivity in crime reporting, we see that all information has been clearly gathered from official sources, in this case, only the police. This is essential to see to maintain objectivity and refrain from spreading misinformation about sensitive cases. In line with the same values, we see the use of modifiers such as ‘accused’, ‘allegedly’ and ‘reportedly’ over and over again, throughout the course of this article. The pictures used are also of significance, as we see no pictures of the actual crime scene are used in the article; only an animated recreation of the story is used to remain sensitive. Since this article also makes the mention of a suicide, it ends with the suicide prevention helpline mentioned.

Under the same headline, there is a similar story that occurred on Monday, that week. Stories like this can be grouped to show timeliness and proximity/relevance to the current story.
